The role of the Chief Science Officer is to oversee the scientific functions. Basic and applied research projects and the development of new products. You are someone who possesses discipline-specific knowledge, leadership and business skills to promote the efficiency, profitability and competitive position for us. The candidate will drive scientific leadership and work with scientists in the Disease Positioning group to perform deep analysis of disease related “omics” datasets (external and internal) to develop new positioning hypotheses for research concepts targeting cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and rare diseases. In addition, this candidate will utilize state of the art approaches to analyze datasets to develop early hypotheses for biomarker identification and patient selection.

The candidate will manage and prioritize multiple projects within the research group and define, implement and communicate tactics for achieving overall R&D project goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Lead responsibility for surveying and synthesizing scientific and competitive data to further develop an innovative scientific strategy.
• Devote 50% effort to managerial and leadership functions while continuing to serve as a principal investigator in the food laboratory.
• Identify opportunities for research initiatives.
• Oversee the allocation of research and laboratory space and resolve space related disputes.
• Present scientific topics and background to large groups of laypersons around the world.
• Direct budget management for scientific research programs and allocation of resources.
• Partner with operations & brand team to identify opportunities for collaboration with industry affiliates.
• Set priorities for executing world-class scientific research programs.
• Represent the company at industry scientific and business conferences.
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with academic institutions and other nutraceutical companies.
• Define and grow areas of strategic focus in alignment with the company’s objectives.
• Identify and engage appropriate external experts, developing recommendations, and presenting findings to senior leadership.
• Act as a primary driver in the successful execution of the company’s research strategy.
• Serve as a mentor and developer of staff. Establish clear performance metrics for by identifying key objectives and performance measures to drive both program and organization success.

Core project management deliverables

• Work with scientists in the disease areas of cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and rare diseases to develop experimental and analytical plans focused on modeling disease associated mechanistic data to develop positioning and differentiation hypotheses for new concepts in the research portfolio
• Work with colleagues in translational medicine to leverage internal clinical datasets to enhance disease understanding and better position new concepts in research portfolio
• Utilize analytical approaches such as machine learning, to back translate and bridge pathologic pathways derived from patient and human disease studies with in vivo models
• Identify and drive collaborations with leading investigators / institutes in the area of systems modeling of human disease
• Work with scientists in disease areas to analyze multi-dimensional data from patient samples to derive early hypotheses for potential disease and mechanism related biomarkers to be incorporated into early clinical trials
• Develop deep understanding of the key disease areas and utilize that knowledge to build novel systems biology models of disease to generate hypotheses for potential patient selection and differentiation
• Present strategies, interpretation of analysis and recommended next steps to various levels of management and governance committees

Essential Requirements

• The successful candidate must have a track record of leadership roles.
• A PhD in Sciences is required, with a minimum of 10 years postdoctoral experience working in research, biotechnology or pharmaceutical. Broad knowledge of emerging trends in science.
• Highly developed scientific analytical skills, able to critically assess, integrate and synthesize broad areas of scientific research from diverse sources to develop specific recommendations.
• Proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment and on cross-functional teams.
• Ability to use broad expertise and to develop scientific strategies, company objectives and principles, and to achieve goals in creative and effective ways.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with key external stakeholders and potential stakeholders.
• Able to travel extensively conducting workshops and talks to members of the public on scientific and health related topics.
• Strong interpersonal, influencing, presentation, and written and verbal communication skills.

Education & Experien

• 2+ years of consulting and operations experience, ideally with management consulting, technology or start-up company with independent responsibility of leading cross-functional projects.
