The Genome Analysis Services group offers
technologies for high-throughput DNA sequencing and genotyping,
library construction, and advanced data mining, to enable discovery
and validation of molecular genetic markers an single nucleotide
polymorphisms (SNPs).
Genome Analysis has applications across the entire spectrum of drug
discovery and development, including discovery of genes linked to
disease/drug targets, development of DNA-based clinical diagnostics
and Pharmacogenomic analysis. In agro sector, it has applications in
the development and testing of new seed varieties, including
development of markers, development of linkage maps, marker assisted
breeding and varietal identification and fingerprinting. Avesthagen
RPO further adds value to it by integrating wet-lab work with
bioinformatics platform. EST databases, SNP databases, comparative
genomics, genome mapping are results of such integration.

Development of genetically modified (GM) crops
With the sequencing of the rice genome,
the potential of using genomics for designing crops with desired
traits has been recognized. Genes and regions from different
varieties - domestic and wild - can be introgressed into desired
backgrounds by marker assisted breeding as well as by transformation
and thus designer crops can be developed. Avesthagen has been
involved in development of markers linked to various traits . We have
also been providing services in the area of marker assisted breeding
for pyramiding of genes in various crops. Avesthagen has been a
pioneer in India in the development of genetically modified crops. We
have developed a patented technology for cytoplasmic male sterility
in rice and tomatoes and have developed drought tolerant lines of
rice. Avesthagen is also engaged in the production of sunflower with
nutritional enhanced for an essential fatty acid.
